- Contents: This introductory very well illustrated text is both a joy to read and riddled with causality, without burdening the reader with mathematical equations. The concentration on the oceans is underpinned with very good explanations of the chemistry of water in its various states, which of course includes the atmosphere. In addition there is a chapter on the interactions between the oceans and the air. The dynamics of the ocean circulation are described well, as are waves and tides. There is a good coverage of biological aspects and of the role the oceans play in climate change.
